African American women have 35% chance of dying from heart disease according to Black Women's Health Imperative. African American women are not taking car of themselves as they should. They are mostly taking care of their families and let their own health take the back burner. The poor decision making on food choices is just one reason why African American women are dying from heart disease. They are cooking things like chitterlings, oxtails, and hot water corn bread. These foods are high in fat and cholesterol. The fact that they don't get regular exercise. The today is much to short for most because of working, school, being a mother, and a wife takes all their time. Then the problem is heredity. Some women believe that just because the generation before had heart disease that there chances are slim to none to get it also.
An Hispanic women was asked about health issue she was concern about. She answered kidney disease. Both her mother and father are on dialysis due to kidney failure. She was very worried about her own kidney and those of her three daughter. She stated that she tries to get regular check-up for herself and her daughter but it is difficult because she is trying to take care of her parents. She was very emotional because she didn't know what she would do if she had to be on dialysis because there is no one there for her kids.
The health concern that bother me is cancer. My grandmother died from cervical cancer, and I have an aunt who was battling breast cancer and won. I try to get regular check-up and monitor any changes in my own body. I know that some problems are just heredity but if caught in the beginning a better outcome will probably happened.
Heart disease is the # 1 killer of women in the United States. It’s important that we all take care of ourselves by eating a diet that is low in fat and getting regular exercise. Did you know that even moderate walking is great for one’s heart? That is a type of exercise that most people can easily do without overexerting themselves. It is also very important to note that especially minorities are at higher risk for cardiovascular problems due to the traditional dishes or diets that are followed. Are there any special steps that you or your relatives have taken to modify the dishes that are prepared? I try really hard to use canola oil instead of Manteca and keep the consumption of foods like tortillas and other fatty foods to a minimum. While my spouse may not like it, having a healthy heart is worth it. Kidneys are a really important part of our body as well. I know quite a few people who even at young ages have experienced kidney issues and even had to go to dialysis. It’s really hard to take care of oneself when there is so much on our plates. But as I stated in my blog, in order for us to be able to care for our families, we must first take care of ourselves. Great posting, can’t wait to read more as the semester progresses. ~E.Rodriguez HS 3133.51
